Shettima urges families to uphold honesty, patience at Buratai’s daughter’s wedding

Vice President Kashim Shettima has urged Nigerian families to uphold the values of honesty, patience and compassion, saying strong homes remain the foundation for building responsible citizens and enduring societies.

Shettima spoke on Saturday at the wedding reception of Aishatu Yusuf Buratai, daughter of former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd.), and her husband, Umar Abba Zoru, held at the Tukur and Tukur Farm along the Abuja–Keffi Road in Nasarawa State.

Addressing guests as the special guest of honour, the Vice President said marriage provides an opportunity to nurture virtues that sustain families and society.

“Our faith describes marriage as half of religion, and I have always understood why. It is at home that patience, honesty and mercy are tested daily, far from the applause of strangers,” he said.

Shettima said the true measure of a family was not its status or influence but the values it passes from one generation to another.

“What makes a family great is not prominence or influence. The truest measure of a home is the value it transfers quietly from one generation to the next, a value that no lawyer can draft into a will and no hardship can erase,” he added.

The Vice President noted that many young people now live in an era that rewards public visibility over character, warning that success without strong values cannot sustain relationships.

He described marriage as a commitment that requires forgiveness, patience, loyalty and responsibility, stressing that lasting unions are built on character rather than material success or outward appearances.
