Soyombo to unveil photo exhibition on African migrants’ Sahara journey

Investigative journalist and publisher Fisayo Soyombo is set to unveil a photo exhibition documenting the experiences of migrants who undertake the perilous journey through the Sahara Desert in search of entry into Europe.

The exhibition, titled “Desserts from the Desert,” will feature photographs from Soyombo’s latest investigative work, for which he spent 47 days undercover investigating the experiences of migrants along the Sahara-Mediterranean route.

Soyombo, through his official Instagram page, said the exhibition would use photography to bring the realities of migration into view while creating space for broader conversations about African migration, human dignity, trafficking and irregular migration.

According to him, the project captures the experiences of people encountered along the route and seeks to present their journeys beyond statistics and conventional accounts of migration.

The exhibition will feature 47 photographs documenting different aspects of the investigation and the experiences of migrants encountered during Soyombo’s 47-day journey.

The Lagos edition is scheduled to hold from October 26 to 28 at Alliance Française in Ikoyi, with other editions planned for Abuja and selected countries abroad, including Germany, Italy and Greece.

Soyombo’s photographic exhibition follows his investigative report “Undercover: Europe Through the Sahara Desert and the Mediterranean Sea,” which documented his journey through parts of West and North Africa while investigating the conditions migrants face on the route to Europe.

Through the exhibition, Soyombo is expected to extend the investigation from written journalism to visual storytelling, using photographs to deepen public understanding of the risks, vulnerabilities and human experiences associated with irregular migration.
