‘You secretly married lawyer who handled divorce case’ – Wife accuses husband in court

By Boye Oyeyemi –
There was drama at the Akure Customary Court this week as a woman, Mrs Folakemi Adebayo, accused her ex-husband, Mr Emmanuel Oyebanji, of secretly marrying the female lawyer who handled their divorce case.
The emotionally charged scene unfolded when Folakemi, visibly distressed, stormed into the courtroom, claiming that the lawyer, who she had trusted to be impartial during their legal proceedings, had instead been romantically involved with her former husband.
“She ruined my settlement! I trusted her to be neutral, not to be sleeping with my husband,” she cried in the open court, alleging that the lawyer and her ex-husband began their relationship before the divorce was finalised.
She further claimed the lawyer used her position to influence the settlement in her favour, leaving her with less than she deserved.
Folakemi urged the court to revisit the divorce judgement and launch an investigation into what she described as professional misconduct and ethical violations.
However, Mr Oyebanji denied all allegations, maintaining that his relationship with the lawyer only began after the divorce was officially concluded. He told the court that Folakemi had walked out of their marriage in less than a year and had severed all communication.
The lawyer at the centre of the controversy also denied any wrongdoing. Addressing the court, she insisted that her relationship with Mr Oyebanji remained strictly professional throughout the legal process and that there was no misconduct on her part.
After hearing from all parties, Presiding Judge Ireti Sunday ruled that the court could not act based on suspicion alone, stressing that there was no concrete evidence to support the allegations of conspiracy or misconduct.
