Tinubu canvasses ethical governance, institutional reforms at global conference

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday canvassed ethical governance and far-reaching institutional reforms as essential pillars for peace, justice and sustainable development in a rapidly changing world.

The president made this known at the Global Council for Political Renewal Conference in Cape Town, South Africa, where he was represented by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris.

Presenting Nigeria’s position on good governance, institutional reforms and human rights, Tinubu said ethical political conduct is no longer optional amid deep political and ideological polarisation. He noted that misinformation spreads faster than truth and stressed the need to protect free expression while restoring responsibility, civility and trust in public discourse.

Highlighting domestic efforts, the president said his administration is strengthening transparency, accountability and institutional performance under the Renewed Hope Agenda, with a focus on modernising institutions and reducing leakages.

“Public office is a trust,” he said, adding that governance decisions must improve the daily lives of citizens through people-centred social and economic interventions and youth-focused policies.

Tinubu also pointed to measures aimed at guiding the responsible use of technology and digital platforms, describing political renewal as a continuous process of building strong institutions, safeguarding democratic space and delivering real value to the people.

He reaffirmed Nigeria’s alignment with the ideals of the Global Council for Political Renewal, which promote dialogue, justice and peace, and stressed that international cooperation remains critical amid global economic uncertainty and security challenges.

Dignitaries at the event included the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Eswatini and President of the council, Russell Mmiso Dlamini; Secretary General Prof. Furio Honsell; Prime Minister of East Timor, Jose Ramos-Horta; and President of the National Assembly of the Central African Republic, Simplice Mathew Sarandji.
