University student beaten to death over missing iPhone, NANS seeks justice

The National Association of Nigerian Students has condemned the alleged mob killing of a University of Jos student, Ibrahim Mbaye, who was reportedly beaten to death by fellow students over allegations of stealing an iPhone 16.

In a statement issued by its National President, Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, the association described the incident as cruel, senseless and unacceptable, calling on security agencies to ensure that everyone involved is brought to justice.

According to NANS, Mbaye was allegedly assaulted by a group of students, publicly humiliated and locked in a room over the theft allegation, even though the missing iPhone was reportedly never recovered from him.

The association said no allegation, regardless of its nature, could justify mob violence or extrajudicial punishment, insisting that such acts have no place on university campuses or in society.

Meanwhile, NANS acknowledged reports that some suspects had been arrested and urged security agencies to conduct a thorough, impartial and speedy investigation into the incident.

Afeez said justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done, adding that holding those responsible accountable would serve as a deterrent against future acts of violence.

The student body also extended its condolences to the family of the deceased, his friends and the University of Jos community over the tragic incident.

It stressed that no student should lose his or her life to jungle justice and called for greater respect for due process and the rule of law on campuses across the country.
