Nigeria advances talks in Doha to enhance learning for Almajiri pupils

Nigeria is forging new international partnerships to improve educational opportunities for Almajiri and out-of-school children, following a series of high-level engagements in Doha, Qatar.
On the final day of an official visit to Doha, the Minister of Education (Basic and Secondary), Dr. Tunji Alausa, held strategic talks with key Qatari authorities aimed at expanding support for vulnerable learners across Nigeria.
In a meeting with Qatar’s Minister of Education, H.E. Lolwah bint Rashid Al Khater, both sides explored avenues for enhanced teacher training for Mallams, upgrades to Tsangaya schools, and strengthened assistance for the 33 bilingual schools currently supported by the Islamic Development Bank.
The Nigerian delegation also met with the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) and Education Above All (EAA) to deepen collaboration on tackling educational exclusion, improving child protection, and providing safe, modern learning environments for disadvantaged children.

Qatar reaffirmed its commitment to partner with Nigeria, with officials from both countries expected to finalise a Memorandum of Understanding early next year to formalise the initiatives discussed.
According to the federal government, these efforts are part of a broader push to ensure that every Nigerian child—regardless of background, circumstance, or location—has access to quality education and the opportunity to thrive.
