Residents of Akure, the Ondo State capital, are to observe a seven-day traditional period beginning Wednesday as the Deji and Paramount Ruler of Akure Land, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi, Odundun II, commences his annual Ulefunta leave.
The monarch’s Chief Press Secretary, Adeyeye Michael, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday, noting that the traditional leave would run from September 16 to September 22, 2026.
As part of the observance, the beating of drums will be prohibited across Akure main town throughout the period, while residents are expected to adhere to the directive.
The palace also announced the closure of roads leading to the Deji’s Palace during the seven-day period, directing motorists and other road users to use alternative adjoining routes.
Similarly, markets, shops and stalls situated around the palace will remain closed for the duration of the traditional rites.
The statement urged residents to go about their legitimate activities peacefully while respecting the restrictions associated with the monarch’s seclusion.
According to the palace, the Ulefunta period allows the Deji to withdraw from public activities and offer prayers for the peace, progress and prosperity of Akure, Ondo State and Nigeria.
The palace appealed for residents’ cooperation throughout the observance and urged them to comply with the directives, ending with the traditional refrain, “Akure a gbe a ooo.”
