President Bola Tinubu has strongly condemned the murder of prominent Islamic preacher, Sheikh Yahaya Ibrahim Masussuka, and his friend, Adamu Abubakar, following a violent attack in Katsina State.
The two victims were killed outside the cleric’s residence in Dutsin-Ma on Monday evening during a drive-by shooting carried out by unidentified gunmen.
Sheikh Masussuka was widely recognized for his Quranist teachings, which rejected the religious authority of Hadith in favour of the Quran alone, a stance that frequently drew criticism from traditional Islamic scholars.
Known for promoting interfaith harmony and rejecting religious extremism, the cleric was reportedly targeted ahead of a peaceful multi-group convention scheduled for later this month.
Following the assassination, the militant group Ansaru released an audio message claiming responsibility for the killing and denouncing the preacher, though security forces have not yet verified the claim.
In a statement issued by his media adviser Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu described the attack as a heinous act that directly assaults the sanctity of human life and national peace.
The president has directed the Nigeria Police Force and security agencies to reinforce ongoing state efforts to swiftly track down and prosecute all perpetrators involved in the murder.
President Tinubu also extended his sincere condolences to the bereaved families, the followers of the late preacher, and the government and people of Katsina State.
