INEC upholds 66 candidate petitions, rejects 64 nationwide

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed on Thursday that it received 130 petitions relating to governorship and State Houses of Assembly candidates across the country.

INEC made the disclosure in a statement signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna
Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC).

Of the 69 petitions concerning governorship candidates, 41 were successful, while 28 were rejected.

For the State Houses of Assembly elections, 25 of the 61 petitions succeeded, while 36 failed.

The commission said the successful complaints resulted in the inclusion of affected candidates and political parties, while some names previously published were removed after verification showed that they were not contained in their parties’ membership registers.

INEC also removed candidates whose nominations failed to meet applicable legal requirements.

The commission said the names of affected candidates, political parties and states would be reflected in an updated list on its website.
