Abakaliki Catholic Diocese announces death of Bishop Peter Chukwu

The Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki in Ebonyi State has announced the death of its Bishop, Most Rev. Peter Chukwu, who passed away on Friday at the age of 60.

The announcement was made in an official statement issued on Saturday by the Vicar General, Rev. Fr. Donatus Oluwa Chukwu, expressing deep sorrow over the loss and commending the late cleric to God’s mercy.

Born on November 5, 1965, Bishop Chukwu was ordained a priest on July 3, 1993, and devoted decades of his life to pastoral service and the advancement of the Catholic faith.

He was consecrated and installed as the third Bishop of the Diocese on August 19, 2021, a role in which he was recognised for his commitment to evangelisation, pastoral care and strengthening the faith community.

The diocese noted that his leadership left a lasting impact on both clergy and lay faithful, describing him as a devoted shepherd who served diligently until his death.

It called on priests, religious and the laity to keep the late bishop in their prayers and support the diocesan family during the period of mourning, adding that funeral arrangements would be announced later.

Tributes have continued to pour in, with many describing him as a promoter of peace, unity and justice within the church and society.

Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, described the late bishop as a spiritual leader whose life reflected humility and service, saying, “His transition marks the end of an era of profound spiritual guidance, moral clarity and fatherly leadership in Ebonyi State and beyond.”
