Communication scholar Akinyemi Bolaji remembers Raymond Dokpesi, hails enduring legacy

Academician and media expert, Akinyemi Rasaq Akanmu Bolaji, PhD, has paid tribute to the late media mogul and founder of DAAR Communications, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, describing his legacy as one that continues to shape Nigeria’s broadcasting industry.

Bolaji said Dokpesi remains a towering figure in Nigerian media history, noting that his contributions to journalism, communication, and media development are still felt years after his passing.

He said the late broadcaster’s influence extended beyond media ownership, adding that he played a key role in supporting journalists, scholars, and communication practitioners across the country.

Bolaji recalled Dokpesi’s support during the launch of his book, “Journalism, Communication and Society,” a festschrift in honour of Prof. Ralph Akinfeleye, held on April 9, 2021.

He noted that Dokpesi provided free airtime for two weeks across Raypower FM and Africa Independent Television (AIT) to support the publicity of the event.

He added that the media entrepreneur also showed personal interest in the programme by engaging with organisers and sending a team to participate in the launch.

According to him, Dokpesi’s gesture reflected his strong belief in the importance of journalism and its role in society.

Bolaji said the late media icon’s legacy continues through the lives he impacted, the professionals he mentored, and the standards he set in Nigeria’s media landscape.
