Dora Akunyili’s daughter, Njideka, delivers Obamas painting at Presidential Library in Chicago
Nigerian-born artist Njideka Akunyili Crosby, daughter of the late Dora Akunyili, has unveiled a portrait of former United States President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama at the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago.
The artwork, which will be displayed in the Hope and Change lobby of the Obama Presidential Center beginning on Juneteenth, was officially presented during a ceremony attended by the former US president and first lady.
Announcing the unveiling, Obama praised Akunyili Crosby’s artistic talent and the significance of the work.
“It was great joining Njideka Akunyili Crosby — a gifted Nigerian-born, Los Angeles-based artist — to unveil our first portrait together. This piece reflects so many chapters of Michelle and my story, and we’re thrilled that it will be on display in the Hope and Change lobby at the Obama Presidential Center starting this Juneteenth,” Obama said.
Michelle Obama also expressed admiration for the portrait, describing it as a remarkable reflection of the artist’s creativity and vision.
“Barack and I were so honored to have Njideka Akunyili Crosby create our portrait for the Obama Presidential Center. Her artistic brilliance shines through — and the way she infused such life and joy into the piece is truly extraordinary. We love it, and we think everyone who visits the Center will too,” she said.
Akunyili Crosby, who is based in Los Angeles and is internationally acclaimed for her mixed-media works exploring identity, migration and cultural memory, is regarded as one of the most celebrated contemporary artists of African origin.
