FG rules out electricity tariff hike, targets better power supply

The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has said the Federal Government has no plans to increase electricity tariffs beyond the current level, stressing that the Tinubu administration’s immediate focus is on improving power supply, expanding metering, and ensuring consumers pay only for the electricity they use.

Speaking during a media briefing in Abuja on Friday, Tegbe said Nigeria has consistently generated 5,000 megawatts of electricity over the past two weeks, describing the development as a positive sign for the power sector.

“We are already witnessing encouraging improvements in electricity generation. Over the course of the last two weeks, we have consistently generated 5,000MW,” he said.

Addressing concerns over a possible tariff increase, the minister dismissed reports of an imminent hike, insisting that no such policy exists.

“Permit me to address two issues that have generated considerable public discussion. First, there is no policy by this administration to increase electricity tariffs beyond the current level. Our priority is not a tariff increase in the immediate term. Our priority is service improvement, universal metering, and ensuring Nigerians pay only for the electricity they actually consume,” Tegbe stated.

He said the Federal Government remains committed to providing reliable electricity to households and businesses across the country.

“Our ambition is clear: reliable electricity that powers our homes,” the minister added.

Tegbe’s remarks come amid public debate over a possible electricity tariff review following recent comments by President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Power Infrastructure, Sadiq Wanka, which sparked speculation about a fresh increase.
