First lady receives Lagos APC delegation, endorses consensus move on Hamzat

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, on Wednesday received a delegation from the Lagos State Governance Advisory Council (GAC) who formally presented Dr Obafemi Hamzat as the All Progressives Congress (APC) consensus candidate for the state’s governorship race.

The delegation, led by GAC chairman Prince Tajudeen Oluyole Olusi, described the visit as part of a consultative process within the party’s leadership structure. The presentation was also attended by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and other senior party stakeholders.

Speaking during the meeting, Senator Tinubu commended the GAC for what she described as a mature and peaceful political process, noting that Lagos politics has continued to serve as a model of leadership within Nigeria.

“Politically, Lagos State has always been at the forefront, showcasing leadership to the rest of Nigeria. This process reflects political maturity and growth,” she said. She also emphasized that leadership transitions and political outcomes remain within divine will, adding that “all power belongs to God.”

The First Lady further praised Governor Sanwo-Olu for his stewardship of the state, wishing him well as he progresses in his public service journey.

Earlier, Governor Sanwo-Olu explained that Dr Obafemi Hamzat had engaged in extensive consultations with stakeholders across the state, including aspirants and party members. He noted that the GAC had unanimously agreed on supporting Hamzat’s candidacy after deliberations involving its members.

He also disclosed that the decision had been communicated to the President and had received approval before being formally presented to the First Lady for her blessing and guidance.

In his remarks, Prince Olusi highlighted the cultural and traditional significance of seeking the First Lady’s counsel, noting that Yoruba tradition recognizes the role of women in governance and decision-making processes.
