‘Endorsement not a crime in politics,’ says Shettima, calls for unity ahead of 2027

Vice President Kashim Shettima says political endorsements are a normal and lawful part of democratic practice, stressing that they should not be misunderstood or weaponized to create division within political parties.

Speaking on internal party dynamics ahead of the 2027 election cycle, Shettima in an opinion article on Wednesday, emphasised that it is natural for leaders, elders, and stakeholders to express preferences for candidates they believe can strengthen party performance and governance outcomes.

However, he cautioned that such preferences must remain within ethical and democratic bounds, warning against their misuse.

“Endorsements are not strange to politics. Preferences are not crimes,” the Vice President said, adding that influence must not be turned into intimidation or exclusion within party processes.

He stressed that while political actors are free to support aspirants of their choice, such actions should not undermine fairness, unity, or internal cohesion.

Shettima further urged party members to prioritize moderation and respect during internal contests, noting that the credibility of any political process depends on how inclusively and transparently it is managed.
