President Bola Tinubu on Sunday described the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV at St. Peter’s Square as a profound symbol of unity in diversity, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to interfaith dialogue and peaceful coexistence.
Speaking shortly after the papal installation ceremony, Tinubu said: “It is consistent with the true sense of unity and diversity. I am greatly honoured. And we will have to continue to work on it. It is a work in progress—for the sake of our country and the continent as a whole.”
The President was among several world leaders who attended the historic Mass marking the beginning of Pope Leo XIV’s ministry as head of the Catholic Church.
Also speaking in Vatican City, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu, praised Tinubu’s attendance as a meaningful gesture of solidarity with Nigeria’s Christian population.
“It is very symbolic and indicative of the great solidarity he continues to show—not just to the Muslim community but to the entire Christian community,” she said. “He has shown his solidarity with the millions of Catholics in Nigeria by attending this Mass, being himself a Muslim.”
Ojukwu also highlighted the global importance of the new Pope’s mission, especially in promoting peace and conflict resolution.
Presidential aide Bayo Onanuga added that the Tinubu administration remains committed to religious inclusion and fostering interfaith harmony.
