Nigeria, US to strengthen collaboration on press freedom, fight misinformation

The Nigerian Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has revealed that the Nigerian government is collaborating closely with the United States to enhance press freedom in the country.

The announcement followed a meeting between the Minister and the U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, held on Wednesday at the minister’s office.

During the interview with newsmen, Idris highlighted that discussions with Ambassador Mills focused on addressing issues that could further promote media freedom in Nigeria. He noted that while challenges exist, Nigeria is committed to being a global leader in press freedom.

“The ambassador talked about some issues that he thinks we need to address, to improve in the area of press freedom, and we have also given him assurance on what we are doing. He recognizes that we are doing a great job in ensuring that the Nigerian press is not just free but one of the freest around the world,” Idris stated.

The Minister reaffirmed the Tinubu administration’s dedication to press freedom, labeling it a top priority for Nigeria’s democracy. He emphasized the government’s ongoing efforts to tackle areas of concern to ensure press freedom is fully realized across the country.

In addition to discussing media freedom, both officials expressed a shared commitment to combating the growing issue of misinformation and disinformation. Idris noted that the U.S. and Nigeria are aligned in their belief that combating fake news is essential to building a strong and informed society.

“We all believe collectively that there’s no way you can build a virile society when you promote fake news and don’t take the issue of misinformation and disinformation seriously,” Idris added.

Ambassador Mills commended the Nigerian government’s efforts in promoting press freedom and reaffirmed the U.S. government’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with Nigeria in this area. He also acknowledged the global challenge posed by disinformation, especially in democratic nations, and shared insights on strategies to combat this issue.
