NOA warns against wrong handling of snake bites in latest advisory

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has urged Nigerians not to engage in harmful first-aid practices when handling snake bites.

The NOA issued the directive in a public advisory released on Monday via X.

This follows the recent buzz surrounding the death of Ifunanya Nwangene, the 26-year-old soprano queen, who reportedly died after a snake bite incident at her Abuja residence.

In Nigeria, snake bites account for a significant number of deaths, with many victims losing their lives more quickly due to ignorance rather than a lack of proper medical care.

In the advisory, the NOA warned against harmful first-aid practices, including the application of tourniquets, cutting or incising snake bite wounds, and the use of traditional remedies.

The agency further advised that in the event of a snake bite, victims should remain calm and seek prompt medical attention at the nearest health facility.

The agency concluded by encouraging citizens to promote community safety and raise awareness about the importance of immediate and proper response to snake bite emergencies.
