NPFL boss worried over poor continental performance of Nigerian clubs

Chairman of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), Honourable Gbenga Elegbeleye, has expressed concern over the poor performance of Nigerian clubs in continental competitions.
In an interview on Monday, Elegbeleye described the situation as worrisome and assured that the current league management would take steps to reverse the trend starting from the next campaign.
“My major concern now is that even though we have a very stable calendar and a competitive league where clubs can win away from home, one sore point remains — our clubs’ poor outings on the continent,” said the Ikare-Akoko-born football administrator.
He emphasized the need for clubs to retain their best players to improve their chances in continental tournaments.
“You don’t win the league and immediately sell off your best players — some to Libya, Tanzania, and even the Republic of Benin. It’s unacceptable. If they are moving to top clubs in Europe, that’s understandable, but losing 90 percent of your title-winning squad to lower-tier leagues is not the way forward,” he stated.
Elegbeleye also expressed hope that more NPFL players would be considered for the Super Eagles, particularly in the upcoming four-nation tournament.
“I am confident the coach will take a look at some of the emerging talents in the NPFL, just like we had four players invited during the last international window,” he added.
