Ondo mobilises residents against terrorism after Owo massacre convictions

The Ondo State Government has thrown its weight behind the nationwide #UniteAgainstTerror campaign, urging Nigerians to unite against terrorism and violent crimes regardless of political, ethnic or religious affiliations.

The call followed the recent conviction and sentencing of individuals linked to the June 2022 attack on worshippers at a church in Owo, which left scores of people dead and injured.

In a statement issued on Monday by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Idowu Ajanaku, the government described the court verdict as a major step toward justice for the victims and their families.

Similarly, in a television programme, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa said the convictions should serve as a rallying point for citizens to support security efforts and resist all forms of terrorism across the country.

He stressed that national security should not be politicised, urging Nigerians to promptly report suspicious movements and activities to relevant security agencies.

According to the governor, defeating terrorism requires collective responsibility, noting that citizens must remain vigilant and cooperate with authorities in protecting their communities.

The state government also commended the Armed Forces, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Amotekun Corps and other security agencies for their commitment to safeguarding lives and maintaining national security.

It further called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups, civil society organisations and media practitioners to support the campaign, while reaffirming its commitment to measures aimed at strengthening security and preventing criminal elements from operating within communities.
