Ondo police arrest woman over false kidnapping claims

The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a woman over an alleged false kidnapping claim that led to the assault of a commercial motorcyclist in Ore, Odigbo Local Government Area of the state.

The command’s spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, disclosed in a statement on Saturday that the incident occurred on June 4 when the suspect, identified as Abigael Bright, allegedly accused a motorcyclist, Rasheed Awojobi, of attempting to kidnap her while conveying her within the town.

The allegation reportedly spread quickly across the community, attracting residents and passers-by who descended on the rider before police operatives intervened and rescued him from the mob.

Police said preliminary investigations showed that the kidnapping allegation was false and that the suspect allegedly amplified the claim through her WhatsApp status, causing panic among residents.

“The victim sustained injuries during the attack but was rescued by police operatives and provided with necessary medical attention. The suspect is currently in custody and assisting with ongoing investigations,” the statement said.

Reacting, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Felix Ohagwu, expressed concern over the growing trend of false reports and the circulation of unverified information capable of causing public disorder.

“False allegations, particularly those relating to kidnapping and other serious crimes, can provoke violent reactions, endanger innocent citizens and erode public confidence in lawful processes,” Ohagwu said.

The police commissioner also condemned the mob action against the motorcyclist, warning that jungle justice and the deliberate spread of false information remain criminal offences, adding that offenders would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
