The Oyo State House of Assembly has backed Governor Seyi Makinde’s call for an independent United Nations-backed investigation into the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area.

In a statement issued Tuesday by the Office of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, the assembly congratulated the state government, security agencies and residents on the successful rescue of the victims, describing their safe return as a huge relief for Oyo State.

However, the lawmakers said the incident required an independent review because of its unusual nature. They said such an investigation would establish the facts and recommend measures to prevent a recurrence.

The assembly also noted that attacks on schools and mass abductions had become a growing concern across Nigeria. It said international collaboration was necessary to strengthen efforts against terrorism and improve school safety.

Furthermore, the lawmakers defended Makinde’s position, saying his call had been misunderstood. They stressed that the governor had consistently praised President Bola Tinubu, the Armed Forces, intelligence agencies, the Nigeria Police Force, Amotekun Corps and other security stakeholders for securing the victims’ release.

According to the assembly, requesting an independent investigation does not question the professionalism of Nigerian security agencies. Rather, it is meant to identify security gaps, establish the full facts and improve protection for schools and vulnerable communities.

The house also commended the Armed Forces, intelligence agencies, the police, Amotekun Corps, local security outfits and community volunteers for their roles in the rescue operation. It equally praised the media and members of the public for keeping national attention on the incident throughout the victims’ captivity.

The lawmakers expressed sympathy to the families of the security personnel and teacher who lost their lives during the operation. They also called for better welfare, training and equipment for security agencies, urging Nigerians to support initiatives that would strengthen national security and protect schoolchildren from future attacks.
