Police arrest two with 250 live cartridges in Oyo

The Oyo State Police Command has arrested two suspects for unlawful possession of 250 live cartridges during a routine operation aimed at curbing the circulation of illegal arms in the state.

The suspects, identified as 35-year-old Ganiyu Sodiq and 23-year-old Salaudeen Sheriff, were arrested on Wednesday, June 10, by operatives of the command at Budo Pako, Oke-Oyan.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, the ammunition was recovered from the suspects, who are residents of Komu in Oyo State.

The police said the suspects were unable to give any lawful explanation for possessing the cartridges when questioned by investigators.

Preliminary findings suggest that the suspects may be involved in the illegal trafficking and supply of ammunition to criminal networks operating within and outside the state.

The command disclosed that intelligence-led investigations are ongoing to identify possible collaborators and trace both the source and intended destination of the recovered ammunition.

Reacting, the Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Ayodeji Abimbola, commended the officers involved in the operation, describing it as a significant breakthrough in efforts to curb the proliferation of illegal arms.

He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to tackling violent crime and ensuring that individuals involved in criminal activities are brought to justice.

The police also urged residents to remain vigilant and provide timely information to security agencies, stressing that community cooperation remains crucial in the fight against crime.
