Police to begin enforcement against obscured number plates in Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command has announced plans to commence a statewide enforcement exercise against vehicles operating with covered, obscured, defaced, unauthorised or missing registration number plates as part of efforts to strengthen security across the state.
The exercise, scheduled to begin on June 15, is in compliance with a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, aimed at improving public safety and preventing criminal elements from concealing their identities while carrying out unlawful activities.
The Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, directed all Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers across the state to enforce the directive and ensure full compliance within their jurisdictions.
Under the operation, vehicles found displaying covered, altered, fake or unauthorised registration number plates, as well as those operating without number plates, will be impounded and subjected to investigation in line with existing laws and procedures.
The command said the exercise is not intended to inconvenience law-abiding motorists but rather to enhance the ability of security agencies to identify vehicles, investigate crimes, track suspects and strengthen the state’s overall security architecture.
Motorists, transport operators, fleet owners and other road users were advised to ensure that their vehicles carry valid and clearly visible registration number plates at all times. Vehicle owners were also urged to keep their registration and other relevant documents up to date and available for inspection when required.
According to the police, the initiative forms part of broader measures to protect lives and property and create a safer environment for residents and visitors across Lagos State.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, the command appealed for public cooperation and vigilance, urging residents to report suspicious persons, vehicles or activities through designated emergency lines. The police reiterated that security remains a collective responsibility and called on Lagosians to support ongoing efforts to maintain law and order.
