Atiku warns ADC against choosing ‘hyped’ candidate for 2027 presidency

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has cautioned the African Democratic Congress (ADC) against selecting a presidential candidate for the 2027 election based on popularity rather than proven leadership ability.

In a statement issued by his media aide, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said Nigeria’s worsening economic and security challenges require a leader with strong governance experience and the capacity to deliver from day one in office.

He stated that the country could no longer afford “trial-and-error” leadership, stressing that the next president must possess the competence, political experience, and nationwide appeal needed to restore stability.

According to the former presidential candidate, the ADC should prioritise presenting a candidate capable of both winning the election and governing effectively, instead of relying on publicity or social media-driven support.

“Elections are not won on social media enthusiasm alone. Governance is not performance art. The presidency is not a platform for improvisation,” the statement said.

Atiku argued that Nigeria is currently facing deep economic hardship, rising insecurity, weakening institutions, and growing public dissatisfaction, adding that only experienced leadership can address the challenges successfully.

He also urged party delegates to evaluate aspirants based on their governance record, ability to build political coalitions, and national acceptability ahead of the 2027 polls.

Defending his own credentials, Atiku referenced his role in economic reforms and fiscal policies implemented during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo between 1999 and 2007.
