Comedian Ayo Makun reveals reason he stopped attending church

Nigerian comedian and actor, Ayo Makun, has disclosed that he stopped attending church for personal reasons rather than a lack of faith in God.

In a video shared on his Instagram page on Sunday, the comedian said he initially withdrew from his former church after negative narratives about him circulated on social media, adding that he chose to worship online to avoid becoming the subject of whispered conversations.

“Part of that decision was because I just did not want to become the subject of whispered conversations and curious looks, especially when you walk into the house of God. Sometimes when your life has been discussed publicly, walking into a family environment can feel heavier than people realise, so occasionally I just worship online,” he said.

Makun said he later found the courage to attend another church, where he was warmly received by the pastor, his family and members of the congregation, giving him hope that he had found a place to worship.

However, he said he was later dropped from a church programme after internal deliberations over public perceptions about him, prompting him to question whether such perceptions should determine who is welcomed in church.

He stressed that his comments were not intended as criticism of pastors but as a reflection on the church’s role in offering truth, grace and restoration, regardless of the stories people hear about an individual.

Making biblical references, the comedian argued that the church is a place for redemption and refuge, insisting that everyone has sinned and should be able to seek God’s presence without first repairing their public image.

Makun restated his belief in God and the church, concluding his message by asking who the church is truly meant for.
