The Federal Ministry of Defence and the Nigerian Armed Forces have expressed profound grief over the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a symbol of honour, patriotism, and unwavering national service.

In a condolence message issued by the Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, the ministry extolled Buhari’s lifelong dedication to Nigeria, both in military service and in his role as a civilian leader.

“Former President Buhari served with distinction in the Nigerian Army, attaining the rank of General and leading the country as Head of State from 1983 to 1985. He later returned as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023, where he championed integrity, discipline, and the unity of the nation,” the statement noted.

The ministry described Buhari as a role model whose leadership style inspired discipline, commitment to national ideals, and faith in an indivisible Nigeria.

Dr. Matawalle stated that Buhari’s contributions to national security, military reform, and democratic governance remain part of his enduring legacy that will resonate across generations.

On behalf of the Defence Ministry, the minister extended heartfelt condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Buhari family, the Government, and the people of Nigeria.

He also prayed for Allah’s mercy on the late former president and for his admittance into Aljanatul Firdaus, urging Nigerians to honour his memory with reflection and unity.
