Edo updates child protection policy to tackle emerging technology risks
The Edo State Government has validated an updated Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy to strengthen protection for children against emerging threats, including risks linked to technology and artificial intelligence (AI).
The two-day technical validation meeting at the John Odigie Oyegun Public Service Academy in Benin City brought together government officials, development partners, civil society groups and other stakeholders to review the revised policy.
Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Eugenia Abdallah, represented by Daisy Osunde, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding children’s rights and welfare, noting that the review ensures the policy remains relevant to digital and AI-related challenges.
RoLAC Programme Officer and Technical Facilitator, Mr. Imonitie Omokhodion, said the update was necessary to address gaps in the 2015 policy and align it with current realities. He explained that the 2026 version introduces stronger safeguards against new risks posed by technology and AI, and sets minimum standards for all child-facing institutions in the state.
He stressed that child protection is a shared responsibility involving schools, institutions and all stakeholders, not just government agencies.
Participants reviewed the draft policy and made recommendations to strengthen it further. The final document is expected to provide a stronger framework for preventing abuse, exploitation and violence against children, while promoting safer environments across Edo State.
