Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has formally apologised to citizens over the prolonged electricity outages affecting households, schools, businesses, and industries across the country.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, Adelabu acknowledged the hardships caused by the ongoing blackout, particularly amid the intense dry-season heat and assured that power restoration efforts are underway, providing a clear timeline for improvement.

He noted that critical repairs, including those at Seplat Energy facilities, are expected to restore gas supply to electricity-generating plants, revealing that a dedicated committee has been established to ensure gas producers meet domestic supply obligations, with improved payment structures designed to encourage consistent delivery.

Adelabu emphasised that while the sector faces systemic challenges, efforts are ongoing to stabilise the grid and restore reliable power.

“We are working 24/7 to return to the trajectory of 2025, when Nigerians commended us for a job well done. We are work in line with the Federal Government’s target to achieve 6,000 megawatts of electricity output by the end of 2026.”

“Power generation will improve, transmission will improve, distribution will improve, and Nigerians will be better for it. If we could provide such service in 2025, this is 2026, we are willing to do more, to even do better,” the minister concluded,” the minister stated.
