FG laying groundwork for mining innovation — Alake

…hails establishment of Africa’s first Gemology Dept
The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, has pledged full support for the newly established Department of Gemology and Gemstones at Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja, describing it as a groundbreaking initiative that aligns with Nigeria’s vision for capacity building in the mining sector.
During a courtesy visit from a delegation led by Prof. Adesoji Adesugba, Dr. Alake lauded the department as a critical knowledge hub for professionals in the gemstone and jewelry-making value chain. He emphasized that the initiative would play a pivotal role in cultivating a new generation of industry experts capable of driving innovation and growth in the solid minerals sector.
“The university’s initiative is a commendable leap forward. By building a strong talent pool, we are laying the foundation for long-term development and innovation in mining,” Dr. Alake said.
The department is the first of its kind in Africa to offer a formal curriculum in gemology. Its establishment marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to diversify and expand its mining education and technical expertise.

Prof. Adesugba commended the minister’s ongoing sectoral reforms and requested ministerial support to formalize an affiliation between Yakubu Gowon University and the Gemological Institute of Nigeria. He also reaffirmed the department’s commitment to supporting national goals, particularly in boosting mining’s contribution to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
In response, Dr. Alake expressed strong support for the proposed affiliation and encouraged other institutions to emulate Yakubu Gowon University by offering mining-focused academic programs.
“If we are to build local capacity, we must invest in training at home. Your department is a crucial step in that direction, especially in gemology and jewelry production. We are also working toward establishing full-fledged universities of mining, and your input will be invaluable,” the minister added.
Among the visiting delegation were Prof. Aminu Dankishiya, Dean of Science, Yakubu Gowon University; Dr. Tinuke Temitope, Registrar of the Gemological Institute of Nigeria; and Dr. Aminu Isyaku, Head of the Department of Geology and Mining.
