Judges need better welfare for judicial independence, says Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said true judicial independence can only thrive when judicial officers are guaranteed dignity, security and adequate welfare, stressing that judges cannot effectively dispense justice if their basic needs are neglected.

The President spoke on Wednesday while commissioning 10 newly constructed residential units for judges of the Federal High Court in Katampe District, Abuja.

Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu said the project was more than a housing development, describing it as a strategic investment in the nation’s justice system.

“True judicial independence is built on the dignity of our judicial officers. By providing these state-of-the-art residential quarters, we are ensuring that our Federal High Court judges operate from a place of security, comfort and utmost dignity,” he said.

The President noted that protecting the welfare of judges was essential to safeguarding the judiciary from undue influence and compromise.

“This project is a deliberate shield against vulnerability, a statement that Nigeria values those who interpret her laws,” he added.

Tinubu said providing judges with secure accommodation and conducive working conditions was not a privilege but a national necessity.

“We cannot expect judges to dispense justice without fear or favour if their basic comfort, security and peace of mind are left to chance,” he said.
