Lagos teachers to join protest over rising cases of kidnapping

The Lagos State Wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has announced plans to stage a protest rally on Tuesday, June 2, to demand the release of abducted teachers and learners across the country.

The union disclosed this in a notice signed by its State Secretary, Comrade Ayetoba Gbenga, and made available to journalists on Monday.

According to the notice, the rally will commence at 7 a.m. from the Under Bridge area in Ikeja and proceed to the Lagos State Government House in Alausa.

The protest, described by the union as the “mother of all rallies,” is aimed at drawing attention to the plight of teachers and students who remain in captivity, as well as honouring educators who lost their lives in the line of duty.

The union said the demonstration forms part of ongoing efforts to pressure relevant authorities to intensify actions toward securing the release of abducted teachers and learners and improving security in schools.

NUT also called on media organisations to provide extensive coverage of the rally in order to amplify its demands and raise public awareness about the security challenges facing the education sector.

The planned protest comes amid growing concerns over recent attacks on schools and the abduction of pupils, students and teachers in parts of the country, particularly in Oyo State, where dozens of learners and education workers were recently kidnapped.

Reaffirming its commitment to the welfare and safety of teachers, the union declared that it would continue to advocate for improved protection of schools and the safe return of all abducted educators and learners.
