LASEMA assures public as rescue operations continue after Lagos Island fire

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has provided an update on ongoing search and rescue operations following the recent fire outbreak at the Great Nigeria Insurance Building on Martins Street, Lagos Island.

The fire incident, which reportedly left several persons missing, has generated widespread concern among members of the public.

In a statement issued on Thursday, LASEMA acknowledged the anxiety and distress the incident has caused families and loved ones of those affected, assuring them that intensive rescue efforts are underway.

“LASEMA acknowledges the anxiety surrounding the reported missing persons and assures the public that search and rescue operations are actively ongoing,” the agency said.

It added that its emergency response teams, equipped with specialised tools and working in collaboration with relevant agencies, are thoroughly assessing the affected areas to ensure that no one is left unaccounted for.

The agency also appealed to members of the public who have been unable to reach loved ones, colleagues, or relatives believed to have been in or around the building at the time of the fire to report to the LASEMA Complaints Unit located at the incident site.

According to the agency, all information received will be carefully verified and documented to help compile a comprehensive list of missing persons, aiding rescue, recovery, and identification efforts.

LASEMA confirmed that it is working closely with other emergency response, health, and security agencies to ensure a coordinated and efficient operation.

The agency further urged members of the public to remain calm, cooperate with emergency officials, and avoid the incident scene to allow responders to carry out their duties effectively.

“We are committed to safeguarding lives and property and will continue to provide timely updates as the situation develops,” the statement concluded.

LASEMA’s response underscores the importance of coordinated emergency management during critical incidents and reaffirms the agency’s commitment to public safety.
