Nigerian influencer Alvin slams Nollywood stars over partisan politics

Popular Nigerian social media influencer Alvin Ogheneruese, fondly known as Alvin of Lagos, has urged Nollywood celebrities to invest in other profitable businesses rather than allow themselves to be used as political tools.
The fashion icon, who spoke in a video shared on his Instagram page on Wednesday, decried the country’s economic situation and urged Nigerians to consider the status quo when making decisions ahead of the next presidential election.
He also criticised celebrities who dismiss people’s grievances despite making money from the public, urging Nigerians to be careful about whom they support during financial difficulties.
The entrepreneur suggested other ventures Nigerian celebrities could explore while waiting for acting roles, arguing that their involvement in partisan politics was largely driven by a lack of alternative sources of income. According to him, some celebrities remain loyal to politicians because of the financial benefits they receive, which their primary businesses may not provide.
Alvin’s comments came amid growing concerns among celebrities over persistent inflation and the country’s economic crisis.
Veteran Nollywood filmmaker Tunde Kelani had earlier shared excerpts from his satirical film, Opalaba, a Yoruba-language micro-web series that examines contemporary issues in Nigeria. The excerpt, from episode three, questioned the loyalty and patriotism of political supporters who accept cash gifts from politicians, highlighting economic hardship as a motivating factor.
Reacting to the excerpt, Adewale Okunnu criticised the government in the comment section, writing, “They tight everything for the masses in order to generate poverty. Hence, when they need them they will give them tokens to regain the power. Once again EWE OJU OMI KI NI ISINMI, GBOGBO WON KO NI SINMI”.
Another user replied, urging Okunnu to speak to his colleagues who openly support politicians. Okunnu told the user to address whoever he was referring to and stay out of his comment, insisting that he had made his position clear.
