The Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum and Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has described the recent flood disaster in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State as a national tragedy, urging urgent and coordinated relief efforts.
In a statement issued on behalf of the Northern Governors, Governor Yahaya extended heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Niger State over the catastrophic flooding that occurred on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.
The flood, triggered by hours of torrential rainfall, claimed several lives, left many missing, and displaced hundreds of residents. It also destroyed homes, farmlands, and critical public infrastructure, plunging entire communities into despair.

He commended the swift response by the Niger State Government, led by Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, and praised the efforts of emergency agencies working around the clock to provide humanitarian assistance.
“This tragic event highlights the growing threat of climate-induced disasters and the urgent need for sustainable flood control and resilience strategies across Northern Nigeria,” Yahaya said.
He assured the people of Niger State of the Northern Governors’ support and urged individuals, corporate organizations, and development partners to contribute to the relief and rebuilding efforts.
“As we mourn with the bereaved families and stand in solidarity with the displaced, we are ready to work with Niger State in taking decisive steps to ensure such disasters are better mitigated in the future,” he added.
