NSC mourns Buhari, celebrates his legacy in sports, national unity

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who died on Sunday in a clinic in London, United Kingdom.

Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023 and as military Head of State between 1983 and 1985, was described as a pivotal figure in the country’s political history. The NSC said his legacy of integrity, patriotism, and national service remains etched in the nation’s memory.

In a tribute, Mallam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the NSC, praised the former president’s commitment to national development and discipline. He highlighted Buhari’s belief in youth empowerment and national unity, which he said inspired many in the sports sector.

“Under his leadership, sports became a strategic tool for diplomacy, economic development, and youth engagement. One of his final acts in office on May 28, 2023, was signing the National Sports Commission Act 2023,” Dikko noted.

Also paying tribute, Director General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, said Buhari’s contributions to sports development in Nigeria were enduring and impactful. He emphasized Buhari’s unwavering support for using sports to foster national pride and cohesion.

“From Olympic preparations to grassroots development, he saw the value of sports in shaping our future. His passing is a national loss. May Allah grant him Aljannatul Firdaus,” Olopade said.

The NSC commended Buhari’s vision of sports as a unifying force and an engine for youth development. It acknowledged his efforts in creating policies that advanced the role of sports in the national agenda.

The commission extended heartfelt condolences to the Buhari family, the Federal Government, and the entire people of Nigeria.
