NSCDC arrests 16 over alleged kidnapping, arms deals, illegal mining

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested 16 suspects linked to a criminal network allegedly involved in kidnapping, illegal arms deals, unlawful mining and counterfeit currency operations in Kano State and Edo State.
The suspects were apprehended during coordinated intelligence-driven operations carried out by the Commandant General’s Special Intelligence Squad in collaboration with the NSCDC Kano State Command and security operatives attached to BUA Cement in the Okpella area of Edo State.
According to the corps, the operation targeted individuals suspected of involvement in kidnapping-related activities, unlawful possession of firearms, criminal trespass, illegal mining and counterfeit currency dealings.

Preliminary investigations indicated that some of the suspects were allegedly involved in the movement of illegal arms, while others were arrested for engaging in unauthorised mining activities within restricted locations around the Okpella axis.
During the operations, NSCDC operatives recovered locally fabricated rifles, suspected charms, mining tools and materials believed to be connected with the production of counterfeit foreign currency.
The Commandant General of the corps, Ahmed Abubakar Audi, commended the operatives for their courage and professionalism in carrying out the operation.

“The corps will continue to deploy intelligence-led operations to dismantle criminal networks threatening national security and economic stability,” he said.
Audi also directed that investigations be intensified to track down other suspects currently at large and ensure that those found culpable are prosecuted in accordance with the law.
