NYSC official arrested over death of female corps member

An official of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Ogun State, Abass Olalekan, has been taken into police custody following the death of a female corps member, Victoria Ariyo.

Victoria, who was serving under the Abeokuta South Local Government Area (LGA), reportedly died on Tuesday after a failed abortion procedure. Her remains were buried at Kobape Cemetery along Kobape-Sagamu Road in Abeokuta.

It was alleged that Victoria became pregnant after a romantic relationship with Mr Abass, who was the Local Government Inspector (LGI) for Abeokuta South at the time. The pregnancy and subsequent attempt to terminate it reportedly led to complications resulting in her death.

Victoria’s death comes barely a month after another female corps member, Adeleye Mary, also serving under Abeokuta South LGA, died mysteriously. Mary was attached to the Ogun State Television (OGTV) as her Place of Primary Assignment (PPA).

A source said, “The first lady died at her residence, which is not far from her PPA. They found her lifeless body in the apartment, and up till now, nobody can tell the cause of her death.” Both Victoria and Mary were reportedly friends.

Confirming the LGI’s arrest, a police source said Mr Abass is in custody at the command’s headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta. The source also questioned the legality of an official engaging in a romantic relationship with someone under his supervision.

The state police spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed Victoria’s death and said the investigation is ongoing. He, however, declined to comment on the LGI’s arrest or alleged involvement.

The NYSC spokesman for Ogun State, Mr Emmanuel Igba, had not addressed the issue at the time of filing the report. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Victoria Ariyo’s death.
