Oyo government insists on circular road project, appeals to protesters

The Oyo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to the Ibadan Circular Road project, describing it as a key initiative designed to attract investment and spur economic growth across the state.

Commissioner for Information Prince Dotun Oyelade, in a statement, said the recent protests were not unexpected but noted that some individuals may be seeking to hijack the process for personal gain. He urged residents to focus on the planned engagement with genuine landowners rather than reacting to provocative remarks.

Prince Oyelade emphasized that the Circular Road project is a defining initiative avoided by previous administrations, and the government is determined to see it through to completion. “The project is guided by a clear vision and deliberate objective to bring lasting development to the state,” he said.

On compensation and resettlement, the commissioner stated that negotiations are ongoing. He cited previous road projects, including the dualisation of major roads such as Idi Ape, Bashorun, Akobo, and Odogbo Baracks, where over ₦2.3 billion was paid to compensate property owners along 250 kilometres of roads.

The first phase of the Circular Road project, covering 32.2 kilometres from Abiola Ajimobi Technical University to Badeku Junction, has affected only 1,354 buildings out of a total of 7,340 structures along the 110-kilometre corridor. This represents just 18% of structures, Prince Oyelade noted.

He further explained that over ₦800 million has already been disbursed to approximately 200 verified claimants, with additional payments ongoing. He warned against the activities of land speculators building and selling properties in the corridor, contrary to government instructions.

The commissioner stressed that the majority of residents understand the project’s benefits and called on protesters to immediately cease disruptions that interfere with social and commercial activities in Ibadan.

Prince Oyelade concluded by affirming the Seyi Makinde administration’s commitment to transparency, describing the project’s implementation as careful, humane, and designed to ensure fairness for all affected stakeholders.
