Oyo Muslim community condemns abductions, holds special prayers for victims

The Muslim Community of Oyo State has declared that kidnapping, terrorism and extortion are contrary to the teachings of Islam, stressing that individuals involved in such crimes do not represent the Muslim faith.
The group distanced Islam from criminal elements reportedly using religious arguments to justify abduction and other violent activities.
The position was contained in a statement issued on Friday and jointly signed by the Chairman of the Muslim Community of Oyo State, Alhaji Ishaq Kunle Sanni, and the Secretary-General, Alhaji Murisiku Abidemi Siyanbade.
The statement followed reports that some abductors had attempted to defend kidnapping and extortion by invoking Sharia principles.
According to the community, Islam is founded on peace, justice and the protection of human life, values that are fundamentally opposed to violence, intimidation and criminality.
The community also called on security agencies to intensify efforts to apprehend those behind recent abductions and other criminal activities in Oyo State while urging residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement authorities.
Reaffirming its support for ongoing rescue operations, the Muslim Community pledged cooperation with security agencies working to restore peace and secure the release of victims currently in captivity.
Under the leadership of the Chief Imam of Ibadanland and Grand Chief Imam of Oyo State, Sheikh Al-Imam Abdul-Ganiyy Abubakar Agbotomokekere, the community announced a special prayer session for the safe return of the abductees on Sunday, June 7, 2026, at the Yidi Agodi Praying Ground in Ibadan.
