OYSCATECH staff suspend strike after government intervention

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology (OYSCATECH), Igboora, has suspended its indefinite strike following interventions by the Oyo State Government.

The strike, which began on July 1, 2025, involved members of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics (SSANIP). It was driven by grievances over delayed and fractional salary payments, unpaid allowances, and arrears of promotions despite a 25% subvention increase from the state government in January.

In a joint statement signed by Comrades Tajudeen Adeyemo (NASU), Oyediran S.O. (SSANIP), and Tiamiyu M.B. (ASUP), the unions lamented the worsening financial conditions faced by staff, which they said severely affected morale and productivity.

The decision to suspend the strike came after Governor Seyi Makinde inaugurated governing council members for state-owned tertiary institutions on July 11. The governor acknowledged the financial constraints of the institutions and promised a further review of their subventions.

The unions said the governor’s assurances, along with mediation from Education Commissioner Hon. Olusegun Olayiwola and members of the new governing council, convinced them to put the strike on hold.

Academic and administrative activities at the college are now scheduled to resume fully on Monday, July 21, 2025.

While commending the state government’s swift response, the unions warned that the institution’s funding model remains unsustainable and must be urgently reviewed to avoid future disruptions.

They reaffirmed their commitment to peaceful dialogue aimed at restoring stability and dignity to the institution’s working environment.
