Tinubu commissions 60MW Elebele gas-fired plant in Bayelsa
President Bola Tinubu has officially commissioned a 60-megawatt gas-powered Independent Power Plant (IPP) in Elebele, located in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
The project is expected to strengthen energy security in the state, significantly improving electricity supply and supporting industrial development across the Niger Delta.
Delivered under the leadership of Governor Douye Diri, the power plant forms a key part of Bayelsa’s independent power strategy aimed at reducing dependence on the national grid and providing reliable electricity to residents and businesses.
Powered by gas turbines, the Elebele facility will supply electricity to Yenagoa and nearby communities. It is anticipated to attract investment, boost small and medium-sized enterprises, and promote economic diversification in the oil-rich state.
After commissioning the plant, President Tinubu toured the facility, inspecting critical infrastructure such as turbines, transformers, and distribution systems to evaluate its readiness for full operation.
The 60MW IPP is seen as a vital solution to Bayelsa’s long-standing electricity challenges, where inconsistent power supply has hindered economic growth and forced many to rely on expensive diesel and petrol generators.
Earlier on Friday, Governor Douye Diri noted that the project aligns with the “Renewed Hope Agenda” and marks a significant step toward advancing industrial development in Bayelsa State.
