President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Olusegun (Segun) Awolowo, grandson of the late nationalist and statesman Chief Obafemi Awolowo.
Segun Awolowo passed away at the age of 62. In a statement issued on Thursday, President Tinubu described his death as “unfortunate” and a huge loss not only to the Awolowo family but to the entire nation.
“May his soul rest in peace,” Tinubu said in the statement signed by his special adviser on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
The president praised the late Awolowo for upholding the values and legacy associated with the prominent Awolowo name. He noted that Segun, like his grandfather, trained as a lawyer and was committed to promoting truth and justice.
Tinubu highlighted Segun Awolowo’s public service achievements, particularly his tenure as executive director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) from 2013 to 2021, during which he became the longest-serving head of the agency.
“Segun exemplified the Awolowo pedigree in appearance, character and demeanour,” the president said. “He made significant contributions to Nigeria.”
The president extended condolences to Segun Awolowo’s wife, children and mother, Sisi Abah Folawiyo, as well as the wider Awolowo family. He also sympathised with the government and people of Ogun State, the South-West region and Nigerians at large.
