Tinubu reaffirms push for local defence production at NDC Course 33 graduation

By Kunle Sanni –

President Bola Tinubu has renewed his call for Nigeria to boost indigenous production of military hardware, describing it as vital to the nation’s security and long-term development.

Speaking in Abuja on Friday at the graduation of Course 33 of the National Defence College (NDC), Tinubu — represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima — commended the College’s strong research culture and assured that government would review its recent policy recommendations on enhancing local defence manufacturing.

“I have directed that relevant stakeholders study your recommendations and harvest the strategies you proposed, because strengthening indigenous manufacturing is indispensable to our nation’s security and development,” the President said.

Tinubu also endorsed the course theme, “Strengthening Institutions for National Security and Development in Nigeria,” describing strong institutions as the backbone of democracy, stability, and prosperity.

“Without strong institutions there can be no lasting democracy,” he said, noting that his administration is prioritising institutional reforms alongside economic renewal. He pointed to a 48 percent year-on-year surge in the stock market as proof of investor confidence but admitted that inflation and food insecurity must still be tackled to ensure citizens feel the impact.

The President pledged to complete construction of the College’s permanent site in Piwoyi and directed the Ministry of Defence to produce a clear upgrade plan. He said the ultimate goal is to transform the NDC into a Defence Postgraduate University that will serve Nigeria and allied nations.

Addressing the graduates, Tinubu urged them to apply their training in strengthening national institutions and confronting complex security challenges. “You have been trained to think and act strategically. You have been equipped to lead with vision and courage,” he told the officers.

Earlier, NDC Commandant Rear Admiral J.O. Okosu and Deputy Commandant Major General Kevin Ukandu praised the administration’s continued support for the College and expressed confidence that the graduates are prepared for high-level policy, command, and security responsibilities.
