Akpabio warns against nationwide protests over economic hardship

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has issued a stern warning against planned nationwide protests over economic hardship, suggesting that individuals who lost in the 2023 elections might exploit the situation for political gain.

Akpabio’s remarks came on Monday at the State House in Abuja, shortly after President Bola Tinubu signed the new minimum wage bill into law.

Addressing concerns about the protests, Akpabio stated, “People who probably do not have their fortunes in the 2023 election are thinking they can come through the back door, and that will amount to anarchy.”

He emphasized the potential dangers of the protests, implying that some orchestrators are operating with hidden agendas.

“It’s very clear that people who are behind this are very amorphous, very faceless. So what it means is that people are preparing to loot and go round and do all sorts of things,” he added.

The warning comes amid rising tensions and growing public discontent over economic conditions, exacerbated by the recent removal of fuel subsidies and other austerity measures.
