Akwa Ibom exco moves to enhance agriculture, youth development, procurement

The Akwa Ibom State Executive Council held its meeting on Monday, with a focus on strengthening agriculture, youth empowerment, and procurement systems across the state. The meeting, chaired by Governor Eno at the Government House in Uyo, reviewed memos, updates on earlier resolutions, and issued new directives.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Umanah, the Council directed the Commissioner for Agriculture to present a comprehensive report on the state’s agricultural investment value chain. Particular emphasis was placed on cocoa development and the distribution of seedlings to farmers, as part of broader efforts to boost food security and rural incomes.

The Ministry of Agriculture was also tasked with producing a detailed business plan for the state’s vegetable greenhouse projects, ensuring they are fully operational and delivering measurable benefits to citizens.

In the youth development sector, the Executive Council mandated the Commissioner for Youth Development to submit a strategic roadmap outlining actionable programmes to harness the potential of young people in the state. These initiatives are expected to create viable economic opportunities and promote youth participation in state development.

As part of that effort, the ministry was also instructed to conduct a comprehensive review of the NYSC Orientation Camp in Ikot Itie Idung. The Council requested urgent recommendations for its upgrade to enhance the welfare and safety of corps members deployed to Akwa Ibom.

The Council also considered a memo from the Executive Assistant to the Governor on the need to streamline procurement operations. It directed the Ministry of Justice and the Office of the Governor to harmonise all existing guidelines and frameworks into a single working document, aimed at promoting transparency, efficiency, and accountability in the procurement of goods, works, and services.

Reviewing progress made under the current administration, the Council assessed ongoing projects, especially as Governor Eno’s government marks its second anniversary. The Governor expressed satisfaction with the work done so far and the positive reception from citizens across the state.

The Commissioner further announced that the commissioning of completed projects would continue until June 30, 2025, as the administration reaffirms its commitment to delivering impactful and people-focused governance.
