APRA expresses sympathy for Nigeria, Cameroon amid devastating floods

The African Public Relations Association (APRA) has extended its heartfelt condolences to the governments and people of Nigeria and Cameroon following the devastating floods that have recently swept across both nations.

The floods, particularly severe in Nigeria’s Borno State and parts of the Northeast, as well as Cameroon’s Far North Province, have caused widespread damage, leading to the loss of lives and displacement of thousands.

In a press statement on Tuesday, APRA expressed deep sorrow over the tragic events, which were exacerbated by the collapse of dams in Maiduguri, Nigeria, and Mayo Danay, Cameroon, following torrential rains.

The association lamented the extent of the destruction, noting that in Maiduguri, markets have been severely impacted, livelihoods disrupted, and wildlife—including dangerous reptiles—have escaped after flooding partially destroyed a local zoo.

In Cameroon, the floods have similarly devastated communities, with over 100 primary and secondary schools affected, alongside damage to infrastructure, livestock, and livelihoods.

APRA highlighted the humanitarian crisis unfolding in both countries, emphasizing the need for urgent and sustained responses to mitigate the suffering of those affected.

This disaster comes just a month after the collapse of the Arba’at Dam in Sudan, which also led to significant loss of life and displacement.

APRA noted the recurrence of such disasters as a critical issue, calling for a coordinated effort among governments, institutions, and stakeholders across the continent to better manage communications around climate change and other pressing challenges.

APRA reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that aim to secure livelihoods and improve the quality of life across Africa.

The association highlighted its recent efforts to institutionalize committees focused on tackling key challenges facing African people, including a team dedicated to working with the African Union.

Through its observer status, APRA plans to engage with relevant councils of ministers to enhance communication strategies that could drive transformative solutions in various sectors.

The association also commended the swift response of the central and subnational governments of Nigeria and Cameroon, as well as local and international stakeholders, in providing relief to the flood victims.

APRA’s Executive Council extended its sincere condolences to those who have lost loved ones and wished a speedy recovery to the displaced, injured, and those whose livelihoods have been impacted by the floods.
