JUST IN: 3 dead, 18 staff, 13 security, 482 on board in Warri–Itakpe train accident

At least a total of 482 persons were on board the Warri–Itakpe Train Service (WITS) during a fatal accident that occurred near Agbor in Delta State, leaving three passengers dead and several others injured.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) on Monday confirmed the incident, saying rescue and emergency response operations are currently ongoing at the scene.

In a statement, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the NRC, Kayode Opeifa, said all necessary agencies had been mobilised to manage the situation and ensure safety at the accident site.

According to findings by Western Post, a total of 442 passengers and 40 personnel, comprising NRC staff, security operatives, and third-party contractors, were on the train at the time of the incident.

Eighteen NRC staff were on board, including crew and monitoring personnel. All have been accounted for. One staff member sustained a serious limb injury, while others suffered minor injuries that are still being assessed.

Nine third-party contractors were also on board, including cleaners, caterers, and a nurse. All have been accounted for.

Thirteen security personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the Railway Police were on board, and all are safe.

Three passengers were killed in the accident, including two adult females and one female infant. Several others sustained injuries, with the exact number still being determined.
