BREAKING: Former vice president Atiku Abubakar officially resigns PDP membership

Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has officially resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), marking a significant shift in the country’s political landscape.
In a letter dated July 14, 2025, and addressed to the Chairman of the PDP in his Jada 1 Ward, Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Atiku cited irreconcilable differences and a departure from the party’s founding principles as reasons for his decision.
“It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognizing the irreconcilable differences that have emerged,” Atiku stated in the letter.
He expressed gratitude to the PDP for the opportunities given to him, including serving two full terms as Vice President of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007 and contesting twice as the party’s presidential candidate.
“As a founding father of this esteemed party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision,” he wrote, adding that the party’s current trajectory no longer aligns with the ideals upon which it was built.
Atiku, who holds the traditional title of Waziri Adamawa, concluded the letter by wishing the PDP and its leadership well in the future, while thanking them for the support he had received over the years.
