Charly Boy reacts to criticism of lesbian daughter’s engagement

Veteran Nigerian entertainer Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has reacted to public criticism of his daughter, Adaeze’s engagement to a woman, following his celebratory post about the engagement.

Charly Boy shared a video from the engagement ceremony on his Instagram page on Thursday, referring to the couple as his “beautiful Princess and her Husband” and asking his followers to extend their well wishes. “Folks, wish dem well for me,” he wrote.

Adaeze also announced the development on her Instagram page, sharing a picture of herself with her partner. She captioned the post, “WE’RE ENGAGED! #mrsandmrsgray2027”, and expressed excitement about the relationship.

The announcement sparked reactions online, with Nigerians taking to the comment section to express dissatisfaction with the same-sex relationship.

Reacting to the backlash, Charly Boy commented on his congratulatory post on Friday, explaining that Adaeze was previously married to a man and had six children. He added that one of her children had given him a great-grandchild, while saying Adaeze began showing affection for a fellow woman after her previous marriage ended.

In his defence, the entertainer said he could not control his daughter’s preferences since she is an adult, insisting that he could not disown her regardless of her sexuality.

Adaeze was previously married to Metu Anu in a traditional wedding held in Abuja in February 2018. The union later ended in divorce.

Charly Boy, known for his unconventional lifestyle, has also addressed public speculation about his gender expression and sexuality, arguing that embracing traits often associated with femininity does not diminish a man’s identity.
